Sophia Murphy is the Michigan Capitol Correspondent for WZMQ 19 News, reporting from Lansing on state government and policy decisions that impact communities across the state.
Murphy joined WZMQ 19 in 2022 as a multimedia journalist based in Marquette. After graduating from Northern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in Multimedia Production in 2023, she was promoted to full-time reporter and began covering the Michigan Legislature and state agencies from the Capitol later that year.
As Capitol correspondent, Murphy closely tracks legislation, the state budget, and the work of lawmakers representing the Upper Peninsula. Her reporting focuses on issues affecting U.P. communities, ensuring viewers have direct insight into the decisions being made in Lansing. She is responsible for tracking the Upper Peninsula’s elected leaders and issues of concern to the U.P. Her reports are exclusive to WZMQ 19 News and WZMQ19.com.
