Spectators were asked to bring in a stuffed animal to donate to less fortunate children this holiday season. a cascade of toys was tossed onto the ice where they were collected, sorted, and donated to St.Vincent DePaul and the Salvation Army for distribution to area boys and girls. Salvation Army board member Jim Reevs says these donated teddy bears might be some child's only gift this Christmas.

With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, relaxation may seem out of reach, but a new local business in Marquette has just the answer. The world today is full of distractions that are pulling us this way and that, but what if you could unplug and turn down the volume of your busy life? What if you could shut out all the manic energy and noise that surrounds us each day? Say hello to float therapy—an enclosed capsule filled with body-temperature water that allows you to float weightlessly in total darkness. Peter Torelli, Co-owner of Aquapodics float therapy explains the experience. "When you're floating is pretty much like a weight-lifted experience, very calm, very relaxing, as if you're in a dark cave, just floating, just you and yourself," said Torelli.

The Upper Peninsula has seen significant lake-effect snow, especially in areas with a Northwest exposure to Lake Superior. 19 News spoke with the National Weather Service, about why some places received two feet of snow and others, less than an inch. Since Thanksgiving, the City of Munising has seen 24" of snow, while Marquette received less than an inch. According to Meteorologist Matt Zika with the National Weather Service, this past fall has been the warmest on record causing higher water temperatures, so when frigid air passes over that warm water it gets absorbed by the system and falls as snow once it makes landfall. "And with the pattern set up with this cold air over the record warm waters, it just sets up the machine to where it was just dumping snow in areas favored by northwesterly winds," said Zika.

THE CELEBRATION INCLUDES THE POPULAR LASER LIGHT SHOW ON THE LOWER HARBOR ORE DOCK'S NORTHEAST FACE, THE LIGHTING OF THE CITY'S CHRISTMAS TREE, THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARADE, FESTIVE HOLIDAY LIGHTS DOWNTOWN AND A NEW ATTRACTION CALLED OSCILLATION. SUSAN ESTLER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF TRAVEL MARQUETTE SAYS COMBINING ALL THESE EVENTS INTO ONE FESTIVAL WILL HOPEFULLY DRAW MORE PEOPLE. It's a series of different events. Some are events that have existed for a while, but it's kind of bundled together so that it is something special and something unique. DDA is involved with it, as well as The Arts and Culture and Public Arts Commission.

The amount of families in the up experiencing homelessness is growing at an alarming rate. Until now, there hasn't been a homeless shelter in Marquette County just for families. In response, room at the inn is about to open such a place. Executive Director Chelsea Wilkinson says the need is out there. Over the last year and a half or so have seen a really alarming increase in families who are not fleeing domestic violence, and who are experiencing homelessness. And unfortunately, the closest family shelter to here is in Menominee. You've got single-parent households or even two-parent households that just really can't afford rent anymore. And so we want to make sure that there is a safety net for those families.

Today was Marquette's Downtown Day Out, formerly known as Ladies Night Out. However, this year, the Downtown Development Authority chose to expand the promotion to include the entire day, allowing more people to participate. Michael Bradford, the DDA's Promotions Director, says it's all about getting people downtown. "We want people to be aware of what downtown has to offer. It's not just retail, it's not just restaurants, but there's also experience and service. It's very diverse. It's a quite large downtown," said Bradford.

When Howard Schultz visited NMU last month, he shared his humble beginnings, his experiences at Northern and his life skills with a room full of students during an intimate Fireside Chat with NMU President Brock Tessman Wednesday, he shared even more. Through the Shultz Family Foundation, he has gifted NMU with One million dollars. President, Tessman recalls how that came to be. "He visited campus about a month or so ago, he was so inspired by that visit, that he followed up with a million-dollar gift to support student scholarships and our athletics programs," said Tessman. Tessman believes Schultz's visit made an impact on the students. The visit also brought back fond memories for Mr. Schultz, who graduated from Northern in 1975.
