MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) — WZMQ 19 News in Marquette is expanding with the addition of a new bureau at the Michigan Capitol in Lansing.
Reporter Sophia Murphy will cover state government in Lansing. She will cover Michigan’s elected leaders, state senators and representatives from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and issues of importance to the U.P.
Murphy joined the staff of 19 News last year while attending Northern Michigan University. Upon graduation, she was promoted to full-time as a multimedia journalist. She relocated to the Lansing area in August to cover government and politics exclusively for 19 News.
The move adds Lansing to a growing list of 19 News bureaus. In addition to local studios in historic downtown Marquette, WZMQ has reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. and in Delta County and Iron Mountain.
WZMQ 19 became an CBS affiliate last year and launched live and local news from Marquette in October 2022. The station was quickly honored with the Best Newscast award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.
