Evie DeCarlo earns four first-place results
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The NMU women’s swim and dive team dominated the season opener, claiming first place in every event.
The teams of Northern Michigan, St. Cloud State, Davenport, and Lake Superior State swam two sessions, the first at 10 a.m. and second at 4:30 p.m. from the PEIF Pool. Along with controlling the top of the podium, NMU found 27 of a possible 39 podium places. The ‘Cats finished first with 830 points, followed by the Huskies (648), Panthers (460), and Lakers (37).
Leading the team was Evie DeCarlo, who claimed four first place finishes. DeCarlo found individual success in the 100 breast, swam breast for both the first-place 200 and 400 medley relay teams, and led-off the first-place 200 free relay team.
Sophia Moore found individual podiums with a first and second in the 100 and 200 fly and team podiums with the first-place 400 medley team and second-place 200 medley team, swimming fly for both.
Carlotta Santi found four podium-finishes as well, including a pair of individual first place finishes in the 200 and 500 free. Santi then swam fly for both the first-place 200 medley and third-place 400 medley relay teams.
Vicky Burda found the podium four times: as an individual in the 50 free, anchoring the first-place 400 medley relay team, and anchoring the second-place 200 medley and 200 free relay teams.
The diving room had a terrific outing on the board today, as Kalina Ceglinski claimed first in both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving, while freshman Grace Daly finished third and second in the respective events.
Fellow freshman Emma Casas had an impressive day in the pool, claiming three first place finishes that included individual first-place in the 100 back, leading off and swimming back for the 200 medley relay team, and anchoring the 200 free relay team. Casas also podiumed with the 400 medley team, swimming back once again.
Anika Wright found a pair of podium finishes, including an impressive first in the 400 IM and second-place finish in the 500 free. Manuela Araujo claimed silver in the 400 IM before earning gold in the 200 IM.
NMU now looks ahead to rounding out opening weekend against the same foes tomorrow, with action starting at 10 a.m. from the PEIF Pool.
Morning Session
The Wildcats opened the meet with a pair of podium finishes in the 100 fly, led by Sophia Moore in first and Phini Schneider in third, with times of 57.98 and 59.40, respectively.
Anika Wright blew the field out of the water in the 400 IM, finishing first with her time of 4:34.30, seven and a half seconds ahead of her teammate Manuela Araujo (4:42.00) in second, who was ahead of third place by five and a half seconds.
The 200 free was next, and it was Carlotta Santi and Annika Geyer claiming the top two podium spots. Santi claimed first with her time of 1:56.31, and Geyer in second with her time of 1:57.17, beating third place by almost five seconds.
Evie DeCarlo kept the consecutive first-place finishes going, claiming the top spot in the 100 breast with her time of 1:06.80. Julia Zimpel and Ludovica Bonini tied for fourth place with their matching times of 1:07.78.
The ‘Cats swept the podium and claimed six of the top eight spots in the 100 back, led by Emma Casas (59.31), Evangeline Pierce (59.46), and Laura Stockinger (1:01.00).
Kalina Ceglinski opened her season with a win in the 3-meter diving, tallying a score of 268.05 and beating second place by 24 points. Grace Daly rounded out the podium with her time of 232.25.
The NMU ‘B’ team finished first in the 200 medley relay, beating the NMU ‘A’ team by 0.12 seconds to round out the morning session. The team of Casas (back, 27.20), DeCarlo (breast, 30.53), Santi (fly, 26.81), and Abby Keen (free, 24.28) posted a finals time of 1:48.92. The ‘A’ team of Stockinger, Bonini, Moore, and Vicky Burda finished second with a time of 1:49.04.
Evening Session
NMU opened the evening session in the same way the morning session ended, with the NMU ‘B’ team finishing first followed by the NMU ‘A’ team. The ‘B’ team consisted of DeCarlo (24.78), Arabic (24.50), Geyer (24.85), and Casas (24.80), posting a combined total of 1:38.93. The ‘A’ team of Keen, Stockinger, Schneider, and Burda were shortly behind with a time of 1:39.51.
The Wildcats swept the podium for the second time in the 500 free, with the trio of Santi (5:08.30), Wright (5:10.07), and Geyer (5:11.76) claiming the top three finishes, with Geyer’s time nine seconds ahead of fourth place.
After a second place in the 400 IM this morning, Araujo claimed gold in the 200 IM with her time of 2:12.38. Teammate Moore earned silver with her time of 2:13.57.
After anchoring both the 200 medley and free relay teams, Burda found individual success, finishing first in the 50 free with her time of 24.76, followed by Keen in fourth with a time of 25.38.
It was Ceglinski again claiming first place in the 1-meter diving, as she posted a score of 442.65, nearly 40 points ahead of teammate Daly in second at 403.65, who was 30 points ahead of third place.
The evening ended with the 400 medley relay, and it was Northern laying claim to the top four spots. The ‘A’ team of Stockinger (Back, 1:00.05), DeCarlo (Breast, 1:06.25), Moore (Fly, 57.87), and Burda (Free, 54.01) claimed first place at 3:58.18, followed by the ‘B’ team of Pierce (Back, 59.64), Zimpel (Breast, 1:07.06), Schneider (Fly, 58.66), and Keen (Free, 54.84), who touched the line at 4:00.20. The ‘C’ team of Casas, Bonini, Santi, and Arbic finished at 4:03.15, and the ‘D’ team of Malinova, Araujo, Geyer, and Wright claimed fourth.
