Wetzel, Millina, Dollison score for Huskies

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Michigan Tech soccer team earned its first GLIAC win of the season from a three goal first half to defeat Roosevelt 3-1 on a warm September Sunday at Morris Field.

The Huskies elevate to 1-4-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the GLIAC as Roosevelt drops to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the loop.

“Super proud of the effort and energy we put in today! Couldn’t have asked for a better start to the game and a complete first half followed by a solid 2nd half that saw us get a handful of chances we just couldn’t capitalize on,” Tech head coach Melissa Kuhar said. “The girls executed the game plan and we handled our business. It took the whole group today. Overall I am very happy with the performance and getting 3 points on the road.” The Huskies took advantage of Lakers goalkeeper freshman Wendy Magdaleno earning her first career start as the Black & Gold scored twice in the opening 14 minutes with first-year Peyton Wetzel netting her third career-goal.Allison Millina netted her first-career goal off a penalty kick generated by a handball in the box by the home team less than two minutes later to jump out to a 2-0 advantage.

Goalkeeper Bri Barrows recorded a dramatic diving save to preserve the shutout in the 24th minute finishing with four saves on four shots in the first half.

Freshman Kenzie Dollison posted her first career goal just before the end of the first half with a shot from just outside the box after the Lakers failed to clear a free kick from the Huskies taking the Black & Gold into the halftime break with a 3-0 lead.

For the second straight game coach Kuhar went with Ludesha Reynolds to start the second half in goal.

The Huskies had more chances at the goal in the second half highlighted by Sophie Rater finding Wetzel on a high cross that was redirected off the right post with just over 30 minutes to play.

After that, the Lakers seemed to hold more momentum as Daisy Garcia’s free kick went high right and past Reynolds to make it a 3-1 score with under 22 minutes to play.

Roosevelt held a 9-5 shot advantage in the second half forcing Reynolds to make three saves with the Huskies accruing just one shot on goal.

Four Huskies recorded a shot on goal as Garcia and Carisma Rosales each recorded a team-leading three shots on goal for the Lakers.

Up Next

The Huskies return to Kearly Stadium next week for a Friday tilt with Davenport (7:00 p.m.) before a Sunday clash with No. 4 nationally-ranked Grand Valley State (12:00 p.m.).
