Wildcats have one more home contest
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s lacrosse team downed the SVSU Cardinals 20-0 in Marquette, finding their second shutout in program history.
Three different Wildcats scored hat-tricks, including Maddi Bast (4), Josie Lakosky (3), and Taylor Priestley (3). Priestley, who scored three times and posted five assists, set a career-high in points (8) and single-game assists (5). Her eight points are the most by a Wildcat in a single game since Lakosky set the program record of 13 against Lewis nine games ago. 10 other Green and Gold players found the back of the net, including senior Norah Bates, who scored her first career collegiate goal and point in the fourth quarter.
NMU ended with 12 assists on the night, firing 46 shots with 35 being on frame. The ‘Cats held an advantage in ground balls 32-15, in addition to completing 100% of its clears. Northern also had the upper hand in turnovers with 16 compared to SVSU’s 32, with the Green and Gold causing 15 of those.
As a team, the Wildcats set single-season highs in points (32), goals (20), assists (12), shots on goal (35), and caused turnovers (15). Lakosky posted a season-high three caused turnovers, the second-most of her career.
This marks Northern’s second shutout as a program; its first came on February 27th, 2023, vs. Concordia-Ann Arbor, a score of 21-0.
NMU will now look to face Concordia-St. Paul for its last regular season match on Saturday, April 26th, at noon in the Superior Dome.
How It Happened
Lakosky won the first draw control of the game, while Carlson started the Wildcats off with the first goal. Two minutes later, Lakosky found a goal of her own to put the ‘Cats up by two. Bast and Priestley each added two more to the scoreboard, putting the ‘Cats up by six.
Lakosky started the second quarter once again with another goal for Northern. In the second minute, Roberts scored inside the eight-meter, with Sisson scoring just one minute later. Carlson scored her second goal of the game in the 11th minute, while Lakosky found a hat-trick with a pass from Priestley. To end the second, Thomas found her third goal of the season by bringing it in from outside the eight-meter and firing it into the back of the net.
The third quarter began with a goal from Jabas, followed by a hat-trick goal from Bast in the sixth minute. The next goal also recorded another hat-trick, this time for Priestley.
As the Wildcats continued to surge past the Cardinals, Mayer ripped her first goal of the game into the back of the net. Two minutes later, Bates found her first career goal, while Thomas added another to the scoreboard, and Bast ended the game 20-0 with her fourth goal.
