Eighth in 100 backstroke final
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NMU women’s swim and dive team completed day four of competition from the NCAA Championships, and a claim to three All-American’s.
The ‘Cats had four individuals in finals, starting with Anika Wright in the 500 freestyle. Wright earned a second team All-America honor in 12th place with her time of 4:55.21 in the finals after qualifying with a 4:55.28 in the prelims.
The ‘Cats had a representative in both of the 100 backstroke finals, those being Camilla Carbone and Mia Strazny. Carbone finished eighth in the finals with her time of 55.57, earning herself a first team All-America honor. Strazny claimed a third place finish in the consolation finals and 11th overall for a second team All-America honor with her time of 54.71.
The evening ended with the 200 free relay team of Becca Burrows, Abby Keen, Strazny, and Elena Curti. Theteam swam in the second heat, posting a time of 1:33.83 to finish 19th overall.
Prelims/ Morning Session
Both Wright and Geyer swam in the sixth and final heat of the 500 freestyle to kick off the morning session. Wright finished fourth and Geyer eighth in the heat with times of 4:55.28 and 5:02.70, respectively, to finish 11th and 41st overall. With the result, Wright would advance to the evening session and compete in the consolation final.
The 100 backstroke was next, and the ‘Cats had a pair of athletes. Carbone finished third in the third heat with a time of 54.38, followed by Strazny in the fifth heat with her time of 55.05 to finish fifth. Carbone finished sixth among the field, advancing her to the A finals, while Strazny snuck into the last spot for the consolation finals in 16th.
Ceglinski advanced to the evening finals with a prelim score of 444.20 for 8th place, the last spot to slide into the A final in the 3-meter diving.
Finals/ Evening Session
Same as the morning session, the 500 free kicked off the evening session, starting with the consolation final. Wright, who swam in lane three, was third after the first split, then seventh, sixth, sixth, fifth, fourth, third, third, and fourth before touching the wall in that same position with her finish time of 4:55.21, finishing fourth in her heat and 12th overall and a second team All-America honor.
The next event was the 100 back, starting with Strazny in the consolation finals. Strazny got out to a solid start, just 0.3 seconds behind first place in the heat after the first split, before finishing third with a time of 54.71, just 0.25 seconds behind first place and 0.18 seconds behind second, finishing 11th overall for a second team All-America honor.
Carbone swam in lane seven in the 100 back finals and touched the wall in 8th place after the first split. Carbone would finish eighth in the finals with her time of 55.57, claiming a first team All-America honor on the evening.
In the finals of the 3-meter diving, Ceglinski posted a final score of 462.75, finishing eighth in the finals and earning herself a first team All-America honor.
The evening ended with the 200 free relay team of Burrows, Keen, Strazny, and Curti swimming in the second heat in lane eight. The team was in sixth the whole race until the final leg, swimming splits of 23.52 (Burrows), 23.38 (Keen), 23.74 (Strazny), and 23.19 (Curti) finishing seventh in their respective heat and 19th overall with a final time of 1:33.83.
