Huskies visit GVXSU For GLIAC Basketball Quarterfinal March 5

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team concluded the regular season with a 72-56 loss at Parkside on Saturday afternoon at the De Simone Arena.

Parkside (18-9, 13-7 GLIAC) saw three players finish in double-figure scoring, led by Chloe Van Zeeland with an impressive double-double of 24 on 10-of-13 from the field and 13 boards.

“Parkside’s toughness showed through and beat our toughness,” said Tech head coach Sam Clayton. “Obviously we’ve got to shoot it a little bit better and get decent looks—we fell into some old habits that we can’t be doing at this point of the season. Three and-one’s in a row to start the second half was frustrating—hopefully, we can get some confidence going into Wednesday.”

After trailing 5-0 early in the game, Michigan Tech (12-16, 9-11 GLIAC) used an 8-1 run with four points from Maja Kozlowska off the bench. Shortly after, veteran guard Isabella Lenz scored five-straight points for the Black & Gold off an and-one by a steal from Alyssa Wypych and then a jumper in the paint on the next possession, finishing the quarter with a team-high seven points as the team shot 53.8 percent for the period (seven-of-13) pulling ahead 20-16.

However, the Rangers opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run to regain the lead before pulling ahead 34-28 to end the first half, connecting on four-of-seven shots from deep as the Huskies went cold from the field, shooting just 12.5 percent in the second quarter to head into halftime trailing 34-28.

After having the hot-hand from long range in the second quarter, Parkside went just one-of-four from 3-point land in the opening stanza of the second half but dominated in the paint, seeing 18 of their 27 third quarter points come from in the paint with five players scoring four or more points. Michigan Tech, who went 0-for-7 from beyond the arc in the first half, connected on three-of-six from 3-point land in the third quarter but still trailed 61-44 entering the final quarter of action.

Freshman guard Ella Mason scored a team-leading 11 points in the second half as Wypych added eight. The Huskies held Parkside to just 11 points in the final quarter, although the Rangers sustained a double-digit advantage from early in the third quarter til the final buzzer, seeing the score.

Lenz finished with a team-leading 13 points as Wypych put up 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Lillie Peterson also snagged a double-double with a team-leading 13 rebounds to go with 14 points.
