NMU’s Jabas scores double hat trick in lacrosse win over UW LaCrosse

Lakosky and Bast each record a hat trick

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s lacrosse extended its win streak to three, earning an 18-8 victory over the UW-Lacrosse Eagles.

Three Wildcat players scored hat tricks against the Eagles: Josie Lakosky and Maddi Bast earned three goals, while Hannah Jabas led the ‘Cats with six, proving to be the highest-scoring game of her career thus far. Lakosky paved the way for the Wildcats in assists (2) and shots (10), with Jabas leading the ‘Cats in shots on goal (7).

Four other ‘Cats added to the scoreboard, as Laine Stanton scored her fifth goal of the season, and Natalie Thomas and Kamryn Mayer scored their first goals of the season, both adding two for the ‘Cats. Taylor Roberts also found the back of the net in the game, earning her third goal of the season.

With a dominant performance from NMU, the ‘Cats outshot the Eagles 42-17. Northern had a 16-12 groundball advantage, and forced UWL to have 16 turnovers, eight of those being caused by NMU.

How It Happened
To start the ‘Cats off, freshman Katelyn Wozney won the draw for the ‘Cats to have first possession. With a missed opportunity at net, UWL took the ball, but that didn’t stop Northern. Regaining possession, Northern ran a clear, and Maddi Bast took it inside the eight meter for an NMU goal. About 40 seconds later, the Eagles got revenge, as they ran around Northern’s high defense and found the back of the net from inside the 12 meter.

With lots of back-and-forth play, UW-Lacrosses’ defense kept the Wildcats locked until Hannah Jabas took the ball in herself and put one in to give the ‘Cats back the lead 2-1. Keeping up with the momentum, Josie Lakosky scored her first goal of the game a minute and a half later, ending the first quarter 3-1 Wildcats.

UWL kicked off the second quarter with a goal in the 13th minute. But Northern answered back straight away, as Mayer came from behind the net to put one in, while Jabas scored a hat trick to give the ‘Cats a five-goal lead.

Turning up the heat, Laine Staton fired one right outside the eight meter and Mayer scored her second goal of the quarter to further the gap even more. Though UWL found the back of the net once, Bast added two more to the scoreboard, and Natalie Thomas scored her first goal of the season, leaving the ‘Cats with a nine-goal lead.

Only a minute into the third quarter, Lakosky launched another one in. The Eagles countered, scoring their fourth goal of the game, but a pass from Bast to Jabas led a 10+ goal lead for the Wildcats. Yet three more goals came from UWL late in the third, as they closed the gap by seven goals.

Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Lakosky earned a hat trick with a bounce shot to keep the ‘Cats in the lead. A minute later, Jabas scored her sixth goal of the game with an over-the-top pass from Mayer. With her second goal of the game, Thomas returned the 10-goal gap to Northern, but the Eagles scored with less than three minutes remaining to make it 17-8. Just as the game was about to end, Taylor Roberts found the back of the net to end the game with a 18-8 Wildcat win.

Up Next
The Wildcats will head south next week to face Quincy University and Missouri Western in Quincy, Illinois.
