Short-handed, even strength and power play tallies
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team exploded for a 6-1 victory over Ferris State on Friday at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Alex Nordstrom had a natural hat trick and Isaac Gordon scored a pair of goals.
“I’m extremely proud of Alex,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. “He plays the game the right way. This isn’t a participation sport, and he’s matured throughout his career to earn his letter. He’s playing great at the end of his college career. Everyone wants to play with him right now.”
Alex Nordstrom scored even strength, on the power play, and shorthanded for his second multi goal game in a row. He has six goals in the last four games. The last Husky to have a hat trick with a power play, shorty and even strength tally was Pete Rouleau in 2008. Both Nordstrom and Rouleau played high school hockey locally for Hancock.
“We have a great environment here at home, so to be able to score some goals is always special—most importantly the team got the win,” Nordstrom said.
Leading 2-0 midway through the first period, Nordstrom potted three straight to go up by five. While on the penalty kill, he stole the puck in the defensive zone and used his speed to create a long breakaway, shooting over the goaltender’s blocker for his fifth goal of the season at 15:46.
Nordstrom made it 4-0 3:41 into the second period. He had a give and go with Max Koskipirtti and buried a one-timer with Nick Williams adding the second assist.
Nordstrom’s third goal of the night was scored on another one-timer in the slot. The Huskies worked the puck on the power play. Stiven Sardarian sent it down to Logan Morrell at the goal line for a one-touch feed to Nordstrom for his 11th career goal.
Jacob Badal scored the lone goal of the night for the Bulldogs with 3:56 left in the 2nd period. Zach Faremouth and Logan Heroux drew the assists.
Isaac Gordon scored the lone goal in the third period—his second of the night and seventh of the season. He blasted in a one-timer in the slot from Elias Jansson and Max Koskipirtti on the power play for his 25th career goal.
The Bulldogs had a 25-23 shots advantage. Ryan Manzella made 24 saves for the Huskies and improved to 7-2-0 on the season. Noah West had eight saves in the first 31:05 for Ferris State. Martin Lundberg finished the game with nine saves.
The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals by Max Koskipirtti and Isaac Gordon. Koskipirtti tapped in a centering feed by Stiven Sardarian from behind the net 6:04 into the game. Viktor Hurtig added the second assist.
Isaac Gordon’s first of the night was a quick chip shot over the goaltender’s glove from Logan Morrell at 9:30 of the first. Elias Jansson added the second assist.
Max Koskipirtti extended his point streak to four games with a three-point night. He has two goals and six assists in the last four games.
Tech was 2-for-2 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill which included a 5:00 major.
The Huskies play their final home game of the regular season at 6:07 p.m. on Saturday. The six seniors will be honored on the ice after Saturday’s game. The class includes Derek Mullahy, Alex Nordstrom, Marcus Pedersen, Blais Richartz, Trevor Russell, and Jack Works.
