NMU XC Skiers fare well in 20K Mass Start

Dybwad wins for Wildcats

DULUTH, Minn. – The NMU women’s nordic ski team completed the 20k mass start at the CCSA St. Scholastica Invite, led by Victoria Dybwad claiming gold.

Racers had to ski eight 2.5k laps, and the only racer to finish sub-one hour was Dybwad, who never trailed in the 20k. Dybwad posted lap times of 6:45.8, 7:24.3, 7:20.0, 7:27.4, 7:31.8, 7:36.8, 7:32.6, and 7:38.3 en route to a final time of 59:17.4.

Greta Leitheiser of The College of St. Scholastica (1:00:57.5) finished second, and Greta Hansen (1:00:58.1) of Michigan Tech finished third.

Henriette Nilssen (1:03:20.7) and Jordan Parent (1:03:49.5) placed in the top ten, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively. Pearl Harvey (1:06:43.3) finished at 16, and Ella Niznik (1:08:43.8) rounded out the Wildcat skiers at 22.

The NMU men’s nordic ski team wrapped up its weekend in Minnesota with the 20k mass start, with Adrik Kraftson finding the podium.

Skiers raced eight 2.5k laps en route to completing the 20k, and it was Kraftson who led the way for NMU. Kraftson opened his race in sixth after an opening lap of 5:59.5, would jump up two spots to fourth after a second lap time of 6:17.8, then climb one more spot to third after a third lap time of 6:20.2. Kraftson would stay in third after the halfway point and fifth lap, move into second place at the 15k marker, then dropped back one spot and remain in third for thr final stretches of the race and cross the line at 51:47.0.

Colin Freed (51:40.2) and Tryg Solberg (51:41.5) of Michigan Tech claimed the top two spots.

Kristoffer Karsrud (53:58.5) and Jonathan Clarke (53:59.2) finished one after the other in sixth and seventh, respectively. Luke Fricker rounded out the top-ten with his finishing time of 54:35.3.

Hendrik Peterson (56:58.0) and Mathias Haugen (57:54.6) rounded out the Wildcat racers in 21st and 26th, respectively.

NMU now looks ahead to the weekend of February 15 and 16, when the team travels to Houghton, Michigan for the CCSA Conference Championships from the Tech Trails.
