MTU Women unable to keep pace with Ferris State

Standfest collected 12 rebounds

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team hung around until halftime before Ferris State pulled ahead in the second half, seeing the Huskies fall 75-49 at the Jim Wink Arena on Saturday.

“I felt like we came out a little flat, especially our defensive urgency,’ said Tech head coach Sam Clayton. “Then offensively, we just got sped up and didn’t make the decision we’ve been making well the past few games. We have to find a fight and fire to compete and execute full games night in and night out, and that starts with sharp practices.”

Michigan Tech (8-10, 5-5 GLIAC) hung with Ferris State (14-5, 8-2 GLIAC) in the first half, trailing by three points after one quarter played (21-18) and by halftime were only down by five-points (33-28). The Bulldogs hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter, with two from Deshonna Day off the bench. The post players of Janie Tormanen (6 points) and Maja Kozlowska (4 points) combined for 10 points in the first quarter, while Isabella Lenz added five points. The duo of Lenz and Kozlowska recorded four points, respectively, in the second quarter.

However, the Bulldogs doubled the Huskies in points in the third quarter, pushing the lead to double-digits (51-37) entering the final quarter of action, holding the Black & Gold to nine points while hitting two of the team’s 14 total 3-pointers to go with a perfect six-for-six from the foul line.

Ferris State sparked a 10-3 run to open the third quarter and cashed in on four 3-pointers in the final frame and got up by as much as 31 points with 1:33 to play following a 3-pointer by Emma Schierbeek (75-44).

Sophomore guard Dani Nuest scored the final five points with a 3-pointer and a layup down the stretch, although the Huskies would not get any closer, ultimately falling 75-49.

Tormanen was the lone scorer to reach double-figures for the Black & Gold with 10 points, while Kendall Standfest recorded a game-high 12 rebounds. Nuest notably led the team with six assists.

Four Bulldogs finished in double-figure scoring, led by Mia Riley with 16 points and five assists as five players made at least two 3-pointers. Kenzie Bowers scored 14 points and added a team-leading 11 rebounds.

The Huskies are back at the SDC Gymnasium next week, hosting Davenport on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Grand Valley State for Alumni Day at noon Saturday.
