Weisbrod scores 27 points, but doesn’t get support

MIDLAND, Mich. – The No. 22 Northern Michigan women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling at Northwood 68-50 on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats are now 8-1 while the Timberwolves picked up its second top-25 victory to move to 3-7.

Leading 30-25 at the half, the Wildcats struggled in the second, shooting just 6-35 (17.4%). The Timberwolves scored the first 12 in the second half to take the lead and didn’t look back, outscoring NMU 26-8 in the third and 43-20 over the final 20 minutes. The Timberwolves were 14-26 (53.8%) from the floor in the second half.

Jacy Weisbrod led all scorers with 27 points on a 10-19 shooting clip. Northwood’s duo of Lea Holmes (23 points) and Maddie Voelker (22) combined for 45 points on 16-25 (64.0%) shooting. Holmes pulled down 14 rebounds to lead a 46-34 advantage on the glass and a 38-20 points in the paint edge for the home team.

The Wildcats led 16-14 after the first, with Weisbrod connecting on three triples for 11 points. A lot of back-and-forth ensued in the second, but another three from Weisbrod in the final seconds gave NMU the 20-25 halftime edge.

The third quarter belonged to the Timberwolves, outscoring Northern 26-8 with a 17-5 rebounding advantage. NMU shot just 3-18 (16.7%).

The Green and Gold offense couldn’t get going in the final frame and Northwood stayed hot to hand the Wildcats its first loss of the season. The Timberwolves were 14-15 (93.3%) from the charity stripe in the second half and 18-19 (94.7%) for the game.
