Tomashek leads Huskies with 30 points
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior guard Marcus Tomashek recorded his eighth-career 30-point game but the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team could not overcome the 20-point performances by Antwan Kimmons and Cade Meyers, falling to Concordia-St. Paul 83-67 on Sunday afternoon.
“We talked about defense the last 24 hours and I thought we competed better on that side of the floor,” Tech men’s basketball coach Josh Buettner said. “Our execution slipped on offense and that can’t happen if you want to win that game.”
For the second-straight game, Michigan Tech (2-2) held an early lead (9-8) in the opening minutes, and again 8 minutes into the game (14-8), but Concordia-St Paul (4-0) took advantage of multiple scoring droughts from the Huskies, outscore the visiting team 19-4 in the ladder stages of the first half.
CSP knocked down five 3-pointers in the opening frame while the MTU went 0-6 from long range, playing a role in the 35-26 deficit heading into halftime.
Tomashek, who led all scorers with 10 points after 20 minutes, scored the Black & Gold’s first 10 points to open the second half to make it an eight-point game with four minutes played. However, the Golden Bears used 22 second-half points from Kimmons and Meyers to pull away from the Huskies, with their largest lead coming with 2:48 to play (79-58).
The final score was decided at 83-67 in favor of the home team.
Dawson Nordgaard joined Tomashek in double-figure scoring with 12 points on five-for-eight from the field in just 24 minutes of action after getting in foul trouble. Pete Calcaterra recorded a team-high seven rebounds to go with five points.
The undefeated Golden Bears were led by the duo of Kimmons (25 points) and Meyers (24 points and seven rebounds).
