Minnesota Crookston flies past MTU Women’s Hoops

Huskies had four score in double figures

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team splits its home-opening weekend after a 90-68 loss to Minnesota Crookston on Saturday at the SDC Gym. The Huskies are now 2-2 on the young season.

“I’m obviously disappointed, especially defensively,” Tech coach Sam Clayton said. “We do have five underclassmen playing a ton of minutes. We were a step slow on rotations and Crookston made us pay. Once they got on a roll, they made tough shots and we weren’t able to catch up.

“We have a young roster and a limited roster at this point. We will learn from this on film and with repetitions in practice.”

The Huskies jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first quarter after an 8-0 run that saw five points by Ella Mason and a three-pointer by Isabella Lenz. Seven different Huskies made a basket in the first, but UMC cut the lead down to eight at the break.

The Golden Eagles took their first lead with 4:14 left in the half and then went on an 9-0 run of their own to lead 44-39 after two. Kendall Standfest and Isabella Lenz each had 10 points at halftime.

UMC continued to expand its lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Huskies 27-17. The Golden Eagles began the second half on a 13-2 run, and Emma Miller poured in 13 points in the third quarter alone. The visitor’s lead got up to 24 with 3:01 remaining and and then 26 with 47 ticks left.

Tech finished the game shooting 35.8 percent from the floor and 35 percent (7-for-20) from beyond the arc.

Kendall Standfest led the Huskies with 17 points on 7-for-17 shooting. Isabella Lenz (12), Alyssa Wypych (10) and Dani Nuest (10) were also in double figures. Janie Tormanen pulled down 10 rebounds.

UMC shot 47.7 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from three-point territory. Emma Miller scored a game-high 31 points with Willow Thiel (21), Taryn Frazer (18), and Riley Jenkins (10) also hitting double figures.

Tech hits the road to Minnesota next weekend to face more NSIC opponents at St. Cloud State on Saturday and Minnesota Duluth on Sunday.
