Win over D’Youville; loss to Sacred Heart
ADRIAN, Mich. – The Northern Michigan wrestling team split its duals on Saturday in Adrian, defeating D’Youville University (Buffalo, NY) 36-6 before narrowly falling to Division I Sacred Heart 27-21.
Zhivanna Magdaleno, Alissa Caltagirone, and Clarissa Wangen each went 2-0 on the day while four other Wildcats collected one win.
Northern Michigan 36, D’Youville 6
The first dual took place at 117, in which recent U23 World Champion Yu Sakamoto made quick work Rebecca Ridling, winning via tech fall TF 10-0 to give NMU a 4-0 advantage.
At 124, Zhivanna Magdaleno was victorious over Annika Lopez with a victory by fall just before the end of round one at 2:50 to tack on five points for the Green and Gold.
Sharon Leon followed with a 14-2 tech fall win in the battle at 131 over Alexis Brua for four points.
D’Youville picked up its lone victory at 138 as Madison Wellen won by fall over Samantha Chaon (Northern Michigan University) at 1:05 for five points.
NMU bounced right back in the next bout at 145. It took Alissa Caltagirone less than a minute (0:47) to win by fall over Alessandra Elliott for five points.
At 160, Sophia Bassino won by fall over Saniyah Ward (D’Youville University) in a time of 1:34 for an additional five points.
Clarissa Wangen added another win via fall over Zoe Kip at 180, taking only 1:08 to collect her victory and five points for the Green and Gold.
In the final battle at 207, Ozioma Ogu won with a 7-0 decision over Riley Wentlent for three points.
A double forfeit took place at 103 while Trinity Valentin took a win via forfeit for NMU at 110.

At 103, SHU’s Tiffany Stoshak won via forfeit.
SHU’s Lauren won by fall at 2:03 over Trinity Valentin in the battle at 110 for five points. SHU picked up another win at 117 when Nohea Moniz edged Yu Sakamoto with a narrow 6-4 decision for a 3-1 scoring advantage.
Zhivanna Magdaleno collected her second win on the day over Valerie Turgeon, winning by fall at 2:11 for five points. Sharon Leon followed with another victory at 131 over Elleahna Anderson, getting the fall 1:14.
Sacred Heart responded in the bout at 138 when Madison Canales defeated NMU’s Samantha Chaon by fall at 0:57 for five points.
At 145, Alissa Caltagirone controlled the match over Tayla Tildsley, winning by tech fall 12-0 for four points.
SHU picked up the win at 160. Love Daley edged Sophia Bassino by tech fall 12-1 for a 4-1 scoring advantage.
Freshman Clarissa Wangen added her second win in as many tries by defeating Jacklyn Smith by fall at 5:08.
In a one-point match heading into the final bout, SHU’s Madeline Hodges got the win by fall over Ozioma Ogu at 0:50 to secure the win for Sacred Heart.
