Clarkson takes hockey opener from Michigan Tech

Huskies outshot Golden Knnights 32-17

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, falling 4-1 to Clarkson in non-conference action from the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies tied it in the second period but the Golden Knights scored three unanswered goals.

“I thought we played much better than the last game we played,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. “Their consistent upper-end players played well and capitalized on their chances. We have a pretty young team so we need to stay positive and continue to look at areas to grow.”

After no scoring in the first period, the teams found three goals in the second. Clarkson broke the ice when Ty Brassington finished off a centering pass from behind the net off the stick of Ryan Bottrill 5:21 into the second.

Stiven Sardarian tied the game 1:22 later on the power play with his second of the season. He sent a centering pass across the slot that deflected off of a defenseman’s skate and under the goaltender. Chase Pietila and Jack Works assisted on the goal.

The Golden Knights retook the lead with 1:33 left in the second period when they created a turnover in the offensive zone and a long shot through traffic off the stick of Jack Sparks found the back of the net. Ryan Bottrill again set up the goal.

In the third period, Tech had back-to-back power plays but couldn’t capitalize, and it was the visitors who scored shorthanded to make it a two-goal game. Garrett Dahm finished off a 2-on-1 from Erik Bargholtz.

Tech added the extra attacker and Clarkson scored on a two-on-zero breakaway for a 4-1 lead with Shawn O’Donnell putting it in from Erik Bargholtz.

The Huskies dominated shots on goal 32-17. Isaac Gordon had six, Stiven Sardarian had five and Jack Works added four. Former Lake Superior State goaltender Ethan Langenegger made 31 saves. Max Vayrynen stopped 13 shots for the Huskies.

Tech was 1-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.

A large contingent of Mitch’s Misfits alumni were in attendance, celebrating 21 years of existence.

The two teams will wrap up the series at 6:07 p.m. on Saturday. Tech will honor its Sports Hall of Fame Class with former hockey players Shawn Harrison and John Scott along with Tim Bedenis (football), Ali Haidar (basketball), Jennifer (Jung) Lucas (football), Mitch Lake, Glenn Mroz, Dave Nordstrom, Sarah (Stream) Stanek (basketball), and Tom VanWagner (football).
