First American to win three Women’s Wrestling Medals
PARIS – Former United States Olympic Education Center (USOEC) wrestler Helen Maroulis captured her third Olympic medal on Friday night in the City of Light, winning the bronze medal match by a 4-0 margin over Hannah Taylor of Canada.
Maroulis picked up all four technical points in the first of two periods. Leading up to the medal match, she picked up a 7-2 victory in the Round of 16 and a 7-4 win in the quarterfinals before falling to Japan’s Tsugumi Sakurai, the eventual gold medal winner, 10-4 in the semifinals.
It’s the second consecutive Olympic bronze for the 32-year-old from Rockville, Maryland. Her first Olympic medal came back in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, a gold in the 53kg weight class. Each of her bronze medals in Tokyo 2020 and now Paris 2024 have come in the 57kg weight class.
Maroulis moved to Marquette her senior year of high school in 2008-09 to train at Northern’s Olympic training center.
