MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Two Northen Michigan University social work students turned a semester-long project into a community call to action tonight reaching out to local organization Room at the Inn and two bands to make it happen.
The awareness concert, held at the Ore Dock Brewing Company, brought together local experts and live music to address homelessness in Marquette, which is at an all-time high.
A panel of four speakers tackled common misconceptions and ways residents can get involved. The event was free, with donations going directly to room at the inn to help fund shelter and resources for those in need.
One of the student organizers, Grace Rieger, said it’s an important way to reconnect with the community: “It’s really just about showing up and breaking your own personal biases with that community,” says Grace. “Working and doing everything you can to humanize the folks that live around you.”
The night carried that message into the crowd – drawing the community together over live music and a shared cause
