GWINN, Mich. (WZMQ) – It was chilly outside, but that didn’t stop dozens of brave souls from taking the plunge in Gwinn this afternoon.
Leprechauns, prisoners, polar bears, and even Dorothy and the Tin Man from the Land of Oz, all lined up at the Up North Lodge – ready to make a splash for a good cause. The Polar Plunge raises money for Special Olympics Michigan and the athletes who compete across the state.
Organizers, such as Carl White, say that the event is about more than just jumping in a pool: “Everyone comes out and we just have a good time,” says Carl. “The jumpers get food after the plunge, and we have a lot of activities going on with raffles and separate bucket raffles – it’s just raising funds, having fun, and supporting our athletes.”
For these plungers, a little icy water is a small price to pay for the athletes who give it their all every time they compete.
