All 21 players contribute in easy win
MARQUETTE, Mich. — The NMU lacrosse team cruised to a 20-4 win thanks to a full team effort.
The ‘Cats got efforts from all available field players, including points or defensive statistics from 21 different field players. Leading the offensive charge was Josie Lakosky, who scored seven goals and two assists for nine points to go along with team highs in ground balls (6), draw controls (3), and caused turnovers (3). Vanessa Carrico (5-1–6) was second on the team in goals, while Hannah Jabas (2-4–6) paced the team in assists.
Abby Sisson recorded four ground balls to go with her goal and caused a turnover; both Sophie Langsdale and Carrico recorded two caused turnovers, and Evita Weiche matched Lakosky with three draw controls. Lauren Esposito started today’s match, making one save in her time between the pipes, before Hannah Clark made her first collegiate appearance and made a pair of saves.
The ‘Cats outshot the ‘Wolves 37-12, picked up 20 ground balls to nine, went 11-12 on clears compared to 5-11, and caused 11 turnovers to three.
NMU now moves to 2-0 overall on the early season, and will look to maintain its unblemished record when the team hosts McKendree at home on Thursday, February 19, at 3 p.m. ET from the Superior Dome.
How It Happened
The ‘Cats came out of the gates hot, scoring three goals, controlling two draws, and causing a turnover in the first four minutes of play to take an early three-goal lead. The ‘Cats would tally six more goals before the end of the opening frame, and both Lakosky (4g) and Jabas (1g, 3a) led the team with four points.
The ‘Cats got to running time from a goal from Vanessa Carrico, and the ‘Cats took a 12-0 lead thanks to the first goal of Riley Wicklund’s career, and Lakosky’s fifth of the game. Gabby Wilson scored a free-position goal in the dying seconds of the first half, and NMU took a 12-1 lead into the locker room.
At half, the ‘Cats outshot the Wolves 22-6, controlled 14 ground balls to five, went 6-7 on clears compared to 2-7, and caused eight turnovers to Northwood’s one.
The ‘Cats opened the half with Lakosky assisting on Annabelle Johnson’s first goal of her collegiate career. Lakosky would assist on an Abby Sisson tally before adding another goal of her own, and the ‘Cats took a 15-2 lead into the final quarter.
Five goals in the final quarter, evenly spread out through the attack, would guide the ‘Cats to a 20-4 final.
