SANDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – Several young U.P. athletes suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a bus crash Tuesday night.
Around 9:25 p.m., the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to M-553 near the county fairgrounds, where a full-size Escanaba school bus had overturned. The bus was transporting the school’s JV and varsity girls basketball teams home after a game in Marquette when, due to icy road conditions, the driver lost control, leading the bus to cross the center line and leave the roadway to the left. The bus turned on its side in deep snow beyond the shoulder.
The bus had a total of 19 passengers, including the driver. Four girls suffered minor injuries. Two girls, ages 17 and 18, were transported to UPHS – Marquette to be evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries. The other girls were treated at the scene and released. The bus sustained minor damage and was towed out by Cross-Roads Towing.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police, the Sands Township Fire Department, Sands Township EMS, and UP Health System EMS.
