MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is continuing its search for more assistance at the Marquette Branch Prison this year.
In times of short staffing, hands on deck at the Marquette Branch Prison and others across Michigan find themselves continuing their duties under stricter hours to cover more ground.
Assistant Deputy Warden Michael James has been working at the upper Michigan location for 15 years. He says within that time, there is always a demand for more help.
“It has presented some challenges with our staffing levels, but the team we have here has been amazing at overcoming them,” he said. “That’s why we’re doing what we’re doing here, we’re always looking for more people to spread the work.”
In terms of hiring, the facility is open to multiple positions, but particularly searching for corrections officers, medical staff and culinary positions.
“We do have a need in those three locations, but if you can think about it in the city, we probably have something that is an analog here,” explained James. “Anything from an entry level secretarial position to maintenance, mechanics, electricians, and plumbers.”
The Marquette Branch Prison held its first hiring open house of the year on Tuesday afternoon. On the first Tuesday of each month at this branch, the Michigan Department of Corrections welcomes those interested for interviews and a physical training test.
MDOC also utilizes monthly help through Michigan Works! and large events like the Builders’ Show and local county fairs to extend its hiring outreach.
