IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – Two people are in critical condition following a fire in Iron Mountain on December 14.
At 7:38 a.m., the Iron Mountain Fire Department (IMFD) was dispatched to a reported structure fire with entrapment on 4th Street. Crews arrived in under four minutes of dispatch to find heavy smoke and fire showing from the front and sides of the structure.
In a coordinated effort, Iron Mountain Fire crews pulled hose lines and established a water supply. One crew made entry into the first floor from the front of the building and began aggressive interior extinguishment and search efforts. A second crew entered the rear of the building and found an unresponsive victim. Resuscitation efforts were initiated by IMFD personnel before the victim was transferred to the care of Integrity Care EMS
Prior to the fire department’s arrival, two occupants were able to exit the building. All three individuals were transported by Integrity Care to Marshfield-Dickinson Hospital for treatment. Two of the patients were transferred to another hospital. The last update the department received was that those two patients were stable but in critical condition.
Iron Mountain and Breitung Township fire crews continued to overhaul the first floor, second floor, and attic of the structure to ensure no fire conditions remained. Iron Mountain initially responded with an engine and four firefighters. After a recall of off-duty personnel and an additional five firefighters, an engine aerial, and a utility pickup arrived at the scene as well.
Other assisting agencies included the Iron Mountain Police Department, the Iron Mountain Department of Public Works, DTE, WE Energies, and the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
