Wahlin scores both goals for Tommies
The NMU hockey team dropped Friday’s contest by a score of 2-0 to the St. Thomas Tommies.
The Wildcats (1-18-0, 1-10-0 CCHA) played the Tommies (8-7-3, 5-3-2 CCHA) to a scoreless first two periods before Lucas Wahlin broke the deadlock three minutes into the third period. Wahlin would add his second of the night into the empty net with two seconds remaining. Quinton Pepper and Chase Cheslock both registered a pair of assists.
Reigning CCHA Goalie of the Week, Carsen Musser, pitched a 29-save shutout, the first of his career. Wildcat goaltender William Gramme had a phenomenal night as well, making 33 saves for a .971 SV%.
Both offenses and defenses were strong and held their own, with NMU having 30 shots on goal compared to the Tommies’ 35. Both teams penalty-killing units were clicking, as NMU went 3/3 on the PK and UST went 2/2.
How It Happened
The first period ended scoreless, with Northern having eight shots at goal while St. Thomas had nine.
William Gramme had a great save at the 12:30-minute mark of the period. Both Northern and St. Thomas had players surrounding Gramme at the goal, but Gramme was able to deflect the puck while being essentially on his back. He was able to get the puck to hit the goalpost and get away from the hustle.
At the 4:32 mark in the first period, an attempt was made from Northern to get the puck in the goal, but was stopped by a group of Thommie players. The puck looked like it had gone in, but after further review, it had been stopped.
The second period included a power play for the green and gold, where they were unsuccessful in adding a point on the board.
A great attempt was made by Medrick Bolduc, who had a breakaway chance but was stopped at the goal.
The second period ended scoreless, as NMU had 11 shots at goal, and St. Thomas had 8 shots at goal in the frame.
The first goal of the game came at 16:51 in the third, when Lucas Wahlin of St. Thomas scored to bring the score up 0-1.
With two seconds left on the clock, an empty net goal was scored for St. Thomas, bringing the final score to 0-2.
