MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Habitat for Humanity of Marquette County is looking to help keep Yoopers warm this winter.
As its year-round Home Repair Program is under difficult funding this year, next week’s GivingTuesday donations will go towards heating-system repair costs for members of the surrounding community – an initiative that would typically be covered by the program.
Executive Director Deanna Johnson says some homeowners find issues with their heaters just as the temperatures drop.
“This is just the time of year where people are just turning their furnaces on and didn’t know they weren’t working properly, finding themselves without heat,” she said.
The average cost to replace a furnace is around $5,000, and a new boiler can be upwards of $10,000. Johnson says they’re looking for any sizeable donation next week to cover the repair costs for those who’ve applied, and that a little goes a long way.
“Low income families, even moderate income families don’t always have those resources available,” said Johnson. “Every little bit helps, if people can give what they can, everybody can make a difference.”
Applications can be made on mqthabitat.org. In the case of application overflow, the program also has a number of partners around the Upper Peninsula that can step in to assist in the necessary repairs.
