Local Reaction on Minneapolis Catholic Church Shooting

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday morning, a gunman opened fire at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, killing 2 children and injuring 17 others.

The shooting has shaken the Catholic community, especially as the school year had just begun for students. WZMQ 19 captured local reactions to the tragedy, as parents and administrators prepare for their upcoming school year.

“Thankfully, we have our faith to rely upon,” said Director of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Marquette, Jessica Betz. “Part of that faith is trusting, and just trusting that it’s going to be a good school year, and God is watching out for us. We’re continuing with the prayers and just knowing that our schools are doing the best that they can to keep the kiddos safe in the buildings and at mass.”

Parents at Father Marquette Catholic Academy have said that it’s a not an easy conversation to have with their kids about the shooting, but say coming together is the most important thing to do right now.

“There is no answer to the sorrow,” said parent Matt Verbrigghe. “But, the kids specifically brought up, you know, are the kids in heaven? Are they safe now? And I think that’s kind of one thing that brings us all together during this time, is just having hope.”

Parish workers at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette say their hearts go out to the families affected. They tell WZMQ19 that moments like this are painful reminders of how important faith and community support can be, amid a tragedy.

“Its devastating for all of humanity, and for those of us who have faith, even though we can not understand, we suffer with you,” said Annalisa Ogle, of St. Peter.

The school and the church say they hope for change, to ultimately keep their students and community safe.
