GWINN, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, July 30 at approximately 5:30 p.m., Forsyth Township Police, Fire & EMS along with the UP Health Systems Marquette, were dispatched to Mehl Lake, under reports that a teenager had been pulled from the water by friends he was swimming with.
The group had been swimming from shore to a floating raft located 50 to 60 yards out. At some point the teenage victim became distressed and went underwater for several minutes. The teenage friends were able to locate and pull the victim to shore where, along with a resident who observed the incident, began initial lifesaving actions and summoned for help.
After the initial lifesaving actions and resuscitation efforts by Fire and EMS teams, revival was unsuccessful. In a press release Monday morning, Forsyth Township Chief of Police, Brian Kjellin addressed details of the tragedy.
“On behalf of the Forsyth Township Police and Emergency Services Team, I would like to extend our most sincere condolences to the family during this difficult time.” wrote Kjellin. “We stand alongside them and the community as they navigate this tremendous loss.”
Local school districts have also offered the family and the Gwinn School District their condolences.
