K.I. SAWYER, Mich. — The Michigan Flight Museum is bringing its new airshow, Wings Over Marquette, to the Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport on Aug. 2 and 3, offering spectators a mix of historic aircraft displays and aerobatic performances.
The show begins at 1 p.m. both days, but gates will open at 10 a.m., giving visitors the chance to watch aircraft preparations, explore the grounds, and even take rides in select planes.
“Since we are a museum and have World War II aircraft ourselves we are into showing people the different type of aircrafts, but we do also like to show off aerobatic flying because everybody is so different in the airshow world with what they do and nobody flies the same plane the same,” said Ashley Myers, airshow director for Wings Over Marquette. “So it’s cool to just show the public different types of flying.”
Rides will be offered in three aircraft, including a C-47, a B-25, and a Huey helicopter. Those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground can watch these aircraft fly throughout the day.
The museum, based in Belleville, Michigan, is excited to showcase its work in the Upper Peninsula.
“We all love the U.P. A lot of people from our group travel up here, and have cabins up here. So a lot of them are vacationing right now, taking advantage that we’re doing an air show up here,” Myers said. “They’re making a vacation out of this and they’re enjoying the Upper Peninsula and it’s nice exposure to be up here.”
In addition to entertainment, the airshow aligns with the museum’s mission of preserving and sharing Michigan’s aviation history.
“Since a lot of people in Michigan have served at a lot of the bases around, it’s kind of nice for the different generations and often show their grandkids, etc… ‘this is what I did,’” Myers said. “We like to spread all of that.”
General admission tickets range from $20 to $50. Ticketing information is available on the event’s website.
