MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Imagine never having to pay property taxes again. That’s the goal of an organization calling itself Ax Mi Tax. They are traveling the state, circulating a new petition proposing a major amendment to the Michigan Constitution.
The proposal would eliminate property taxes statewide, allowing homeowners and businesses to own their land without any ongoing government fees. But with property taxes funding everything from schools to public safety to roads, the big question is—where will that money come from?
The plan calls for a bigger slice of state sales tax to be redirected to local governments.
To help cover the gap, the petition also shifts 10% of state income, marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco tax revenue to cities and counties.
“What we’re doing is not increasing sales tax, we’re increasing the portion of the sales tax bucket that the state will have to share to every community, but we’re also asking for a portion of the state income tax bucket, and then a portion of the alcohol, marijuana, and Tobacco Tax buckets, as well,” said Ax Mi Tax founder, Karla Wagner.
Opponents of the plan worry it could jeopardize local funding. The petition is now gathering signatures, hoping for a spot on the 2026 ballot.
