Used tires are a hazard to the environment in many ways

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, known as Egle, announced this week they’re awarding over $1 million in grant funding to clean up scrap tires in 55 community recycling programs across the state. In the U.P., the Great Lakes Watershed Partnership is receiving $78,000 to clean up scrap tires in our area.

“Typically, these tires are coming from households, and also from, like, roadside tires and our Great Lakes Climate Core crews, the GLCC actually are sent around and they full tires from trails and areas where they really should,” said Kathleen Henry, an education specialist with The Superior Watershed Partnership.

Used tires are a hazard to the environment in many ways. From the breakdown of toxic compounds in the tires, to the dangerous smoke produced when they burn, to providing a breeding ground for mosquitoes. For more information on tire disposal, visit https://superiorwatersheds.org/
