One dead, one injured in Ensign Township crash

ENSIGN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – One person is dead and another has sustained serious injuries as a result of a car crash in Delta County.

At approximately 10:12 a.m. on June 1, troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gladstone Post responded to a fatal traffic crash in Ensign Township. The preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle traveling southbound on County 513 T Road near Twin Springs Park 20.5 Lane crossed over the center line and struck a northbound vehicle head-on.

The driver of the northbound vehicle, a 60-year-old Rapid River man, sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the southbound vehicle, a 45-year-old Rapid River man, sustained serious injuries and was transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba for treatment. There were no other passengers in either vehicle.

Drugs and/or alcohol may have been factors in this crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic loss,” said MSP Eighth District Public Information Officer Lieutenant Ben Eckola. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”

MSP was assisted by the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, Ensign and Masonville Township Fire Departments, and Rampart EMS.
