Marquette Active Transportation Plan gathering public feedback on pathway safety

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Marquette attracts a high amount of rolling, running, and walking throughout its common trails. These dense areas often come with safety concerns for people using narrow bike paths or crosswalks on busy intersections.

The Marquette Active Transportation Plan (ATP) is committed to gathering public inputs on these concerns with an online survey and public workshop, aiming to create a safer community.

“We’re looking to see what people feel comfortable with in our network, what people feel uncomfortable with in our network,” said Sean Hobbins, Marquette’s deputy city manager. “What kind of infrastructure the people of Marquette are looking for, and some of the areas people see as problems.”

Some of the areas of interest are near busier sections like US-41. This includes previous talks of a potential underpass under the highway.

“Some of the areas people have identified today are where the highway crosses, where cars are moving at a faster rate,” said Hobbins. “Some people aren’t feeing as safe as they should while moving around on bikes or walking.”

This years first time project began in February, taking community input throughout June 20, before designs will be drafted in December.

“We haven’t engaged in as robust of a process as this ATP before, so it’s an exciting thing, and we’re really grateful for the state of Michigan to be a grant partner with us,” said Hobbins.
