MUNISING, Mich. (WZMQ) – On the night of April 28, heavy rain washed out around 75 feet of trail leading to Munising Falls.
With plans for new construction on this trail already in the works, those plans will still remain on schedule for next spring, once the destruction is cleared.
“Spring of 2026 is when we are planning on starting construction to fully replace this trail, not just the part that was damaged, but to make a completely new structure that’s more resilient to events like flooding or intense rainfall,” said Pictured Rocks National Lakeshores Public Information Officer, Hannah Bradburn. “It will also make the trail accessible for folks with mobility needs, with better access to the lower viewing point to see the falls.”
Munising Falls is the most popular trail directly off the visitors center. Its public services at the trailhead will still be available, but access to this trail has been cut off for the remainder of the year.
“No access to Munising Falls this summer unfortunately,” said Bradburn. “But we want to make sure visitors have opportunities to use the public restrooms here and use the parking lot.”
With these circumstances, the National Park Service hopes to bring attraction to the lakeshores many other trails and waterfalls.
“We have plenty of other areas to explore, Miners Castle, Miners Falls, if you’re looking for another waterfall,” said Bradburn. “Especially with all of the snow melt that we have.”
As there are no alternative routes to the waterfall, any travel along the Munising Falls trail is strictly prohibited until further notice.
