GLADSTONE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Tuesday, voters in the Gladstone school district are deciding on two bond proposals.
One proposal would allow Gladstone Area Public Schools to build an additional multi-use facility at the high school. The other would cover several projects, including updated security, parking lot and roofing upgrades, and another multi-use room at Cameron Elementary. If passed, the proposals would result in an extension of the current millage rate.
Poll workers at one precinct said Election Day started off slow, with only 36 voters coming in during the first four hours. However, they say more Gladstone residents have been voting absentee in recent elections. Out of the 928 absentee ballots that were sent out for this election, 621 were returned by Tuesday morning.
“A lot of people are put on a permanent mailing list,” said Gladstone Precinct 1 Chairman George Sailer. “They automatically get a ballot every election.”
A regular poll worker, Sailer says May elections typically have a much smaller turnout than November elections. However, he says it’s important for voters to cast their ballots every time an election is held.
“I think everybody should be able to voice their opinion or their wishes, how they want to see it turn out,” said Sailer. “If people don’t vote, then they really don’t get a say in what happens and what goes on.”
