NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The city of Negaunee unveiled plans for a new park that will cater to children with special needs.

City Manager Nate Heffron presented the plans for the new park to Negaunee residents today.

The park will be designed and constructed for kids of all ages and abilities. From swings that accommodate wheelchairs, to gently sloping topography, to a rubberized, padded floor. The park will be similar to kids cove in Marquette, that has been praised for its inclusive design. For Missy Kauppi, who has a special needs son, the new park opens up a world of opportunity.

“The new parks that, especially the one we’re creating will have things that he can he can climb on he could walk on, he’s got a walker and it’ll be a smooth surface, where he can kind of run from one end to the other and not worrying about stumbling falling tripping,” said Kauppi.

The proposed park will be built on the site of an underused playground on Anne street in Negaunee. To view the plans, please visit the city of Negaunee’s website
