ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – One individual in possession of drug paraphernalia has been arrested after fleeing police near a school.

Around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, an Escanaba Public Safety officer attempted to apprehend Ernest Wayne Dillabough, who had a felony warrant, during a traffic stop. Dillabough fled at a high rate of speed near the Escanaba High School as students were being released. Due to the high speed and large number of pedestrians in the area, officers discontinued their pursuit in the interest of public safety.

Shortly afterward, a concerned citizen reported a suspicious individual walking near a vehicle matching the description of Dillabough’s car. Officers responded to the area, located the suspect, and took them into custody without further incident.

Upon further investigation, officers discovered approximately 11 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia consistent with the sale of narcotics. Dillabough was arrested and lodged at the Delta County Jail.

Dillabough faces one felony charge of delivery or manufacture of methamphetamine, punishable by up to 20 years in prison and/or $25,000. He also faces a third degree felony charge for fleeing a police officer, which carries a 5-year sentence and/or $1,000, and a felony charge for assaulting, resisting, or obstructing an officer, which is punishable by 2 years in prison and/or $2,000.

Escanaba Public Safety extends its gratitude to the community members who provided crucial information that led to the suspect’s arrest. Officials say the incident highlights the importance of law enforcement and the public working together to keep the community safe.
