Visitors Flock to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate to Celebrate Presidents’ Day

MOUNT VERNON, VA – Thousands of people visited the home of our first President, George Washington, in honor of Presidents’ day. There was music, home tours, military demonstrations and if you were lucky enough, you could meet Washington himself.

It was as if you stepped back in time: Washington’s army prepares for battle by loading and firing their weapons. When given the command, they would charge.

This is just one of the events celebrating Presidents’ Day at George Washington’s estate in Mount Vernon, Virginia. Despite the cold and harsh wind, thousands could watch military and music demonstrations, walk around the estate just like it looked centuries ago and view for the first time, the historic preservation work being done at his home.

Isabell, a visitor who is six years old, said she was looking forward to going inside the mansion. Her brother, ten year-old Ethan, said his favorite part about the celebrations was seeing the old guns. He also adds he was looking forward to going on the estate’s nature walk.

“Ethan is studying about the American Revolution, so this was a perfect opportunity,” said Ethan and Isabell’s grandpa, Francis.

“I like- a few time there’s a little performance where they shoot cannons,” said eight year-old Chloe. “Once I thought they were real cannons and I ducked.”

Actors portraying key figures like members of his administration or family walk around the estate. If you were lucky enough, you could speak with Washington himself.

“The question I’m often most asked is why I ran for president,” said the actor portraying George Washington. “But I was chosen to be president because I was the only person everyone could agree on.”

Visitors we spoke with said this was a fun way to celebrate the holiday.

“So far I like that even though someone [Washington] passed away, we still keep thinking about that person and never forget about all the great things he did.”
