MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Tuesday was National Data Privacy Day and the Michigan State Police (MSP) have some tips for protecting your personal data.
The MSP recommends ensuring your passwords are strong and changing them routinely. Avoid clicking on strange links or links from unknown sources, as they often can be used to take information or install viruses on your device.
The MSP also recommends using security tools like multi-factor authentication when available, and making sure you have up-to-date anti virus software.
MSP 8th District Public Information Officer Lt. Ben Eckola said getting money or information back once stolen can be a difficult process.
“We see individuals have their information taken and then they fall subject to identity theft, they have funds taken from them,” said Eckola. “It can be a painstaking process to then recover those funds or get that information off of the internet.”
If your information does get stolen you should inform your local law enforcement or MSP branch immediately.
