LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The first spot for the Democratic candidate in Michigan’s 2026 gubernatorial race has been claimed. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has announced her campaign to run for governor of Michigan. Originally from Pennsylvania, Benson is a Harvard graduate. Benson started her career in Michigan as a clerk for a Detroit judge, eventually becoming the Dean of Wayne State University’s Law School, and then Secretary of State.
“Our law school was ranked low in the country, in the fourth tier nationwide. We’re now in the top 50 because of changes that began under my deanship to cut costs, cut wasteful spending, and invest in people, and that’s the same type of thing I want to do in Michigan.” Benson said. “To take on those tough fights, keep people safe, fight for a quality education for every one of our kids, and also make sure that we’re cutting costs, cutting wasteful spending, cutting through red tape to make Michigan government efficient and transparent and work well for every resident.”
Benson said in her time as Secretary of State her focus has been on improving government systems to make lives easier, and hopes to continue those efforts as governor. She said her experience and her family have allowed her to spend time all over the state, getting to know the unique problems each region faces. Benson said that as Michiganders face rising costs of living, she hopes to work on bringing more high-paying jobs to the Upper Peninsula.
“I think the U.P. is one of the best places in the world to live. My mother-in-law grew up in Marquette. I just ran the Marquette marathon back in August. My roots run deep in the U.P. and my heart is there too.” Benson said. “I care deeply about the future of this state. I believe in our future, but I also know right now it’s really hard for a lot of folks to make ends meet. 60% of the jobs in the state pay under $50,000 a year. A lot of those are in the U.P.. If we want to recognize that the cost of living is going up exponentially, whether it’s buying a home, buying a vehicle, or even being able to put our kids through school, we have to ensure we’re bringing more high-paying jobs to this state.”
The gubernatorial election will take place in November 2026, with Benson the third candidate to officially file. Senate minority leader Aric Nesbit announced his run as a Republican candidate, and the mayor of Detroit Mike Duggan is running as an Independent.
