ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Voters across Delta County marked their ballots in favor of a millage to support local veterans.
In the spring, Delta County’s Veterans Service Officer (VSO) asked the County Board to approve a millage proposal for the general election ballot. He said the need for assistance among veterans is greater than ever, citing the large veteran demographic in the county.
On Tuesday, about 74% of voters said “yes” to one-tenth of a mill for a five-year period. VSO Dave Dziewior says that money will provide services for veterans and fund a county Veterans Affairs Department.
“This is the first time this county has done something like this since it was officially organized like 160 years ago,” he said. “This is a great step in the continuation of our efforts to bring the best possible services and support to all of our county veterans, dependents, and their spouses. Obviously, we still have a lot of work to do. Although this will take a little bit of time, it will get us, I think, on track for great things in the future.”
Dziewior says his top priority is to fully staff the Veterans Service Office with a second full-time VSO and an administrative assistant. He thanks the voters for their support of the ballot proposal.
