ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Halloween, the Catherine Bonifas Civic Center had something for trick-or-treaters of all ages.
Families were invited to stop by the Civic Center to warm up between houses. They enjoyed hot dogs and chips while kids collected candy from sponsors Hgihline, the Escanaba Senior Center, JC Painting and Maintenance, and the Community Foundation for Delta County.
According to City Recreation Director Kim Peterson, the Halloween Celebration started as an outdoor event during the pandemic. It has since become a tradition for many families. Peterson says it also draws people into the Civic Center to learn more about its after school program.
“Our after school program started several years ago,” she said. “People not coming into our facility before, they can check it out. We allow the kids to come into the game room, the gym. It gets them out of the weather for a little bit, and everyone gets to see the kids in the costumes. Especially the workers, it’s nice for the kids to come in and we can see them all dressed up.”
City employees even got in on the Halloween fun, including an Indiana Jones who passed out candy from his satchel.
