Officer Jeff Czarny offers tips on staying safe this Halloween.

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Halloween is just two days away, and with all the fun comes some inherent dangers. The Marquette City Police gave out these suggestions for a safe Halloween.

The forecast calls for rain on Halloween night, and with it getting darker earlier, the combination makes visibility an issue for trick-or-treaters and drivers out on the roads. Marquette Schools Resource Officer Jeff Czarny says common sense safety precautions should never be overlooked.

“The first thing’s first is the word is safety, right? So we need to make sure we’re utilizing sidewalks whenever possible,” said Czarny. “Make sure that for the younger ones, we are with adults. For the older ones that are maybe out, you know, by themselves or away from their parents. Make sure they are together.”

Officer Czarny stresses the importance of being seen, especially on a rainy night.

“You know, when it rains, you get a lot of water on the windshield, little more difficult for you to see your headlights, especially for the little ones. You know that the top of their head doesn’t really reach over the hood of the car, so that’s going to be really key for not only the drivers, to make sure they realize that, hey, it is, you know, Halloween Night. There’s going to be a lot of people out there, but for little ones and their parents,” said Czarny.

Halloween is not just for kids. More adults will be on the roads as well. Czarny says they will have extra patrols in residential areas looking for scary drivers.

“We’re going to have a lot of guys out there. We’re going to be out there because it’s Halloween. There are a lot of people out about running around,” said Czarny.

Even choosing your child’s costume can affect safety.

Face paint tends to gather a little more noticeability as far as like, jackets and coats, I know it’s going to rain. So if you can just get something maybe bright and reflective and something that would really grab your eye, then it’ll probably grab a driver’s eye,” warned Czarny.
