ISHPEMING, Mich. – Major work on the roundabout at the intersection of US-41/M-28 and Lakeshore Drive in Ishpeming is expected to be completed tomorrow. The new roundabout is expected to be fully open to traffic at approximately noon on Wednesday. At this time, the detours of Lakeshore Drive will be lifted. Temporary traffic signals at the intersection of US-41/M-28 and Country Lane will be removed soon.
”We’re very pleased with the way construction proceeded this season and we look forward to all lanes of traffic at the new roundabout opening Wednesday,” said Rob Tervo, manager of MDOT’s Ishpeming Transportation Service Center. ”This modern roundabout provides an efficient solution for a busy intersection while addressing important safety issues.”
MDOT began work on this $6.4 million investment in September 2023. Work included asphalt rebuilding, drainage, guardrail, retaining walls, lighting, signs, pavement markings, bridge widening with steel beams, deck replacement, bridge barrier construction and approach work. Work was paused last winter and resumed in March. Some minor work on the project remains to be completed this fall.

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 91 jobs.
This project is expected to improve safety and traffic flow in the area. Learn more about the benefits of roundabouts on the MDOT website.
