Michigan senator comments on presidential debate performances

LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Following last night’s presidential debate, Senator Debbie Stabenow says she is confident Kamala Harris has proven she is the candidate for Michigan voters.

Senator Stabenow said she is supportive of the plans mentioned by Harris last night to lift small businesses, make housing more affordable, and lower prescription drug costs.

She said the issues Vice President Harris is focused on ‘shout Michigan’, emphasizing that Harris’ performance shows she is the candidate who has a focus on the things the people of Michigan care about.

“For us up in the U.P., protecting our Great Lakes is absolutely critical. She [Harris] has stood with me as I have led the efforts to protect the Great Lakes. Donald Trump, in his first term, in his first budget, tried to zero out my Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.” Stabenow said. “She stood with us to make sure that we continued those funds, the infrastructure bill that she was critical in is helping us to build the second block at the Soo Locks, which is absolutely critical and right now, employing thousands and thousands of people.”

With less than two months left in the race, Stabenow said the enthusiasm for the Harris-Walz ticket will make a difference up and down the ballot.

“I love the fact that the vice president is focused on moving forward, being positive. I get so tired of hearing about how our country’s horrible and how we’re going downhill, there’s going to be another world war, all this stuff running down our country and our people,” Stabenow said. “She believes in America, she believes that we’re moving ahead and in creating opportunity for everybody to succeed, not just the big wealthy billionaires and corporations that Donald Trump wants to support with tax cuts.”

As Stabenow prepares to finish her final term in the U.S. Senate, Mike Rogers is the Republican candidate running to fill her seat. After the debate, Rogers released a statement emphasizing his beliefs former President Donald Trump came out on top.

“President Trump showed tonight exactly why families need his policies back. Where under Harris and Slotkin our families are living paycheck to paycheck, fentanyl kills our children, and EV mandates drive away our jobs, President Trump had America thriving.” Rogers said. “The actions of Kamala and Slotkin have sent our nation down the wrong track, but President Trump will reverse their disaster and have the backs of all Michiganders.”

This will likely be the only time the two candidates debate face to face before November 5th. The vice presidential candidates, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance are scheduled to take the stage on CBS for their debate on October 1.

Imagine never having to pay property taxes again. The proposal would eliminate property taxes statewide, allowing homeowners and businesses to own their land without any ongoing government fees. But with property taxes funding everything from schools to public safety to roads, the big question is—where will that money come from? The plan calls for a bigger slice of state sales tax to be redirected to local governments. To help cover the gap, the petition also shifts 10% of state income, marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco tax revenue to cities and counties. sot Opponents OF THE PLAN worry it could jeopardize local funding. The petition is now gathering signatures for a spot on the 2026 ballot.
