MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Two former primary candidates, one Republican and one Democrat, in the race for the 109th State House District seat are rallying behind the Republican candidate facing Democratic incumbent Rep. Jenn Hill this November.
Republican candidate Karl Bohnak was joined by Democrat primary candidate Randy Girard, who was defeated by Rep. Hill in the primary, and 110th State House District Rep. Greg Markkanen and 38th State Senate District Sen. Ed McBroom at a campaign event Wednesday in Marquette. A letter of support from fellow Republican primary candidate Burt Mason was read aloud, though Mason was not in attendance at the event.
We asked Bohnak how important a former opponent’s support is to him:
“We have our team here, plus we have other people coming in. We’re going to do a blitz on social media. We’re going to be knocking on doors, spreading our message,” said Bohnak.
We posed a similar question to Rep. Jenn Hill about cooperation across party lines:
“I can say that once you get in office, it’s your job to represent everyone in the district, that includes those who didn’t support you,” said Hill
The race for Michigan’s 109th District is a pivotal contest. It has been in control of the Democrats for the past 36 years.
