Iron Mountain High School student showcases artwork at historic Braumart Theatre

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ)  – Tuesday night, the Braumart Theatre hosted an art exhibition featuring the work of Iron Mountain High School student Zahra Wicks. The exhibit showcased pieces Wicks created over the past school year, along with a few from her summer collection.

Wicks, who has been honing her artistic skills for the last 3 years, shared that she rediscovered her passion for art after joining her school’s art class with her art teacher, Mrs. Stanchina. “I did it a lot when I was younger, but then I didn’t really do it as much until I got into school,” she explained.

The idea for the exhibit came from her grandmother, who Wicks described as being enthusiastic about such events. “My grandma, I would say she’s really into these events and these types of events,” Wicks said.

Among her favorite pieces on display were a detailed drawing of an eye and a depiction of a cat. Wicks has a particular talent for drawing eyes, saying, “I feel like I can make lots of different types of them, and I feel like they can always look any way, sort of. They can be really easy to make, or they can be super hard.”

The exhibit featured a variety of mediums, including pencil, pen, pastel, paint, charcoal, and scratch paper. Although she named a few pieces for a school exhibit earlier in the year, Wicks mentioned that most of her works remain untitled.

Despite her evident talent, Wicks, who will soon be a sophomore, doesn’t plan to pursue a career in art. Instead, she is interested in real estate and nursing. However, she aims to continue improving her artistic skills over the next two years at Iron Mountain High School.

“I think a lot of people say it’s hard, but I don’t think it’s that hard,” Wicks said of her creative process. “As long as you try and put effort into it, it can look good.”

Outside of art, Wicks is an active athlete, participating in volleyball, track, basketball, and snowboarding during winter. As she looks forward to the upcoming school year, her focus remains on both her artistic and athletic endeavors.

She listed her pieces for sale at the exhibit, and anyone interested in purchasing an original work can e-mail:
