Local police raise funds for Special Olympics at Iron Mountain’s Dunkin’ Donuts

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) — The Iron Mountain community came together at Dunkin’ Donuts for a unique and heartwarming fundraiser benefiting the Special Olympics. Officers from 3 local law enforcement agencies joined forces for the “Cop on a Rooftop” event, raising awareness and funds for a cause close to their hearts.

Trooper Geno Basanese from the Iron Mountain State Police Post led the initiative, partnering with Dunkin’ Donuts to create a buzz in the community. “People are always wondering what’s going on,” Basanese remarked with a smile. “Everything’s OK, we’re just having a good time raising money for the Special Olympics.”

The event drew significant attention, with many locals stopping by to contribute. “We’ve had tons of people honking, waving, and stopping by, contributing, and we sure appreciate that,” Basanese added.

Among the attendees were local Olympians Tim and Dan Brigham, who have both competed in the Special Olympics for years. Tim Brigham, who has participated for 28 years, shared his excitement: “It’s pretty fun. I play golf and bowling.” Dan, who plays full-court basketball, reflected on his journey, saying, “I started when I was 5 for the Special Olympics. I do bocce at City Park. We’ve got one more practice before the competition.”

Lieutenant Adam Ray, Deputy Director of the Iron Mountain Police Department, was also on-site, introducing a creative donation method for drive-thru customers. “The rope is for the bucket. Tied to the bucket at the end, so when people drive-through, they can drop money in the bucket as well,” Ray explained.

Kingsford Public Safety Officer Matt Brouillette expressed his appreciation for the community’s ongoing support. “I think this is my 3rd year doing it, representing Kingsford Public Safety. All the benefits and proceeds go to the Special Olympics,” he said. Brouillette added that the event’s visibility, with squad cars and officers on the roof, often piques curiosity and encourages donations.

This morning’s fundraiser is just one of several law enforcement-led events planned to support the Special Olympics. On September 10th, the Law Enforcement Torch Run will pass through Iron Mountain, starting at the State Police Post and ending at the Iron Mountain Police Department. Additionally, the city will host its first-ever Polar Plunge in February at Blackstone Pizza, promising a fun and chilly way to contribute to the cause.

For those who missed today’s event but still wish to contribute, donations can be made online at Special Olympics Michigan.

The officers and Olympians expressed their gratitude for the community’s generous support, making this morning’s event a success for a great cause.
