ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The U.P. State Fair concluded its Honored Citizens Day with a Native American celebration.
The event featured performances by Woodland Sky Native American Dance Company and the Crazy Boys drum group. The event was sponsored by the Hannahville Indian Community.
The dances depicted stories from Native American history and featured performers of all ages, which they say is an important part of passing down Indigenous culture.
“It’s an opportunity for folks to get a deeper understanding, a shared opportunity to experience some singing and dancing,” said Dr. Brian Jackson, whose Ojibwe name is Chi-Ayaabe Big Buck. “We’re here to share. That’s really our goal and objective, once they leave [they] say, ‘Man, that was an awesome show.’ It’s good to see the young people involved. They get a deeper understanding of what some of the dance styles are.”
