Local artist repaints U.P. State Fair cooler in preparation for live cheese carving

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The U.P. State Fair is just one week away, beginning Monday, August 12. Attendees will notice a new look for one of the fair’s attractions.

The cooler in the Miracle of Life Pavilion needed a new design. The United Dairy Industry of Michigan contacted Escanaba artist Olivia Capodilupo, owner of Cap Creative Co. LLC, to do the job.

“I’m not going to lie, that’s a pretty big business and I was really excited to start working with larger-scale business,” said Capodilupo, also known as O. Cap. “They found me through the Chamber, so to be involved with the Chamber of Commerce is really cool too.”

The cooler was previously painted white with red trim. Capodilupo painted a black and white cow spot design on the entire exterior of the cooler.

“They knew that they wanted cow spots, but when a client gives me their idea, I take it from there and make a bunch of mockups—digital photos—of what the design might look like,” she explained. “I gave them a couple different ideas of the font and then the placement and size of the spots, and then they got to choose which one they wanted to go with.”

The new design is the perfect look for a cooler that will host “The Cheese Lady” Sarah Kaufmann, who is scheduled to live-carve a cheese sculpture during the fair.

“This definitely represents what she does, and it doesn’t get much more U.P. than carving cheese inside of a cow-spotted cooler,” said Capodilupo. “The U.P. State Fair is just about the biggest deal that there is in the summer and I great up going to the fair, so I was so happy to be able to work on this project that my community is going to be able to come out and see and appreciate. I’m just really proud of it; it’s so cool!”
